FIU Athletics Weekly Recap: April 29

Full steam ahead for May

MIAMI (April 29, 2019) – With the month of April concluding, FIU gears up for the final month in the 2018-19 athletic calendar. Last week's action was highlighted by the softball team going 3-1 with a road victory over UCF, while the track and field squad dominated in Virginia.

Below is a brief recap of how each FIU team performed this past week.

Baseball
Despite going 1-3 over the week, the FIU baseball team scored 24 runs over the course of four games, including a 10-run outing on Wednesday against crosstown foe Miami. Austin Shenton hit safely in all four games to extend his hit streak to 16 games, which ties JC Escarra for the longest in program history since joining the C-USA. Jose Garcia went deep three times to push his team-leading total to 11 homers. The month of April has been very good to Garcia, with eight of his 11 home runs coming since April 1. Franco Aleman pitched a gem in Sunday's 2-1 over Charlotte, as the freshman went the distance while only allowing one run and striking out five. FIU hosts Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday before ending the homestand with a three-game set against UAB over the weekend.

Softball
The FIU softball team earned a 3-1 mark over the past week, with a non-conference victory over UCF and a series win against Southern Miss. The Panthers took down UCF in eight innings on the road Wednesday, after a three-run rally secured the extra-inning victory. In FIU's final home series of the season, the Panthers took two out of three from the Golden Eagels as Tatyana ForbesDeven KennedyMegan KugelmannNatalie Orcutt and Jackie Schoff were honored for Senior Day. FIU is now 25-23 on the year and 6-14 in league action as the Panthers cap the regular season at UTEP this weekend.

Track & Field
Terrisa Russel's school record in the discus and victories from Kenflore AtilusRayquel Berry, and Reed Service highlighted FIU's final regular season meet this weekend in Virginia prior to the C-USA Championships. In the women's discus, Terrisa Russell continued her dominance during the 2019 campaign with a victory, throwing 58.49m. That mark broke the school record by nearly 2.5 meters, and puts her atop the Conference USA rankings. She is also currently fifth in the NCAA, and 32nd worldwide. Kenflore Atilus earned her first career FIU victory in the high jump, while Berry continued a stellar freshman campaign with a PR in the long jump. Service picked up his second victory of the outdoor season with a victory in the long jump as well.
