MIAMI (March 25, 2021) - FIU had four student-athletes earn Conference USA honors this past week, as the Panthers excelled on the field of play.
Women's soccer, men's soccer, indoor volleyball and track & field all had student-athletes top their conference peers this past week.
On the pitch,
Sydney Amparo was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals for the hat trick to give the FIU women's soccer team its first win over Marshall in program history. The award for Amparo marks the third weekly honor overall for the team this season, a new benchmark for the women's soccer program.
Elsewhere on the pitch,
Alessandro Campoy earned his second C-USA Offensive Player of the Week award this season, as the Panther scored twice in the FIU men's soccer win over UAB this past weekend. The program has now won three weekly honors in total this season, with Campoy owning a pair and goalie
Johan Peñaranda winning the other.
In volleyball,
Emily Meyer was named the C-USA Freshman of the Week, after posting a pair of double-doubles to help FIU sweep FAU in the regular-season series finale. The outside hitter posted 12 kills and 10 digs during the team's five-set thriller on Sunday, before her 12 kills and 11 digs in Monday's win over the Owls.
Fellow freshman
Rhema Otabor earned C-USA Field Athlete of the Week honors to round out the successful FIU quartet, as she posted a sensational outdoor debut for the Panthers over the weekend. At the Hurricane Invitational, Otabor took the top spot in the javelin with a throw of 54.19m, which is tops in the league and ranks fourth in the nation. The freshman from Nassau, Bahamas, set a FIU school record and a Bahamas junior national record with her effort, along with passing the World Under-20 qualifying standard.
