MIAMI (April 28, 2021) - The FIU Athletics calendar year is drawing to a close, as three teams competed in conference tournaments this past week.
The week was highlighted by the women's tennis team who won three matches in Denton, Texas, and advanced to the C-USA Championship title match.
Below is a recap of how each sport fared this past week.
Women's Golf
Carolina Andrade finished tied for 12th at the C-USA Championship, as the Panthers closed out the 2020-21 season. Andrade shot a four-over-par at the event to cap her successful season. The Panthers finished ninth overall at the tournament.
Baseball
After winning its midweek game against Stetson, the FIU baseball team dropped its weekend series to FAU.
Derek Cartaya earned four hits, including two homers for the first long balls of his Panther career. FIU and FAU will have a rematch this weekend, as the Panthers and Owls play four games in Boca Raton on April 30-May 2.
Women's Tennis
The FIU women's tennis team won three matches at the C-USA Championship, including a 4-2 upset of No. 37 Rice, as the Panthers advanced to the title match for the first time since 2018. FIU was led by freshman
Andjela Skrobonja, who finished the weekend 4-0 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles action. The Panthers will now await their postseason fate, as the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship selection show will take place on Monday, May 3, at 6 p.m.
Softball
FIU dropped a weekend series to Marshall over the weekend, while
Kayla Whitehead earned seven hits and four RBI to lead the Panthers at the plate. FIU will host WKU on April 30-May 2, as the Panthers and Hilltoppers face off for a four-game series at Felsberg Field. FIU will recognize its seniors between games of Saturday's doubleheader.
Beach Volleyball
The Panthers wrapped up play at the CCSA Conference Tournament, as FIU won two matches in Huntsville, Alabama. The Panthers took down Louisiana Monroe and No. 14 FAU at the tournament, with 4-1 and 3-2 victories. Following the tournament,
Ali Denney and
Lina Bernier were named to the all-tournament team.
Track & Field
Queshun Watson-Riggins earned a victory in the long jump, as the FIU track & field team closed out its weekend at the UCF Knights Invite in Orlando over the weekend. Watson-Riggins jumped 7.28m to take the win, his second in the long jump this season following a first-place finish at Miami. FIU will now prepare for its final meet of the regular season on April 29-30 at the University of North Florida.
