MIAMI (April 6, 2021) - FIU Athletics had an exciting past week, as the Panthers enjoyed success on the field, court and pitch.
The week was highlighted by the women's tennis win over 28th-ranked Rice, as the Panthers stayed unbeaten at 9-0 to earn the program's best start since 1994.
Below is a recap of how each sport fared this past week.
Women's Golf
Led by
Agueda Cortilla, the FIU women's golf team finished sixth overall this past Tuesday at the Georgia State Invitational. Cortilla vaulted up the leaderboard on Tuesday to finish in sole possession of sixth place. With the regular season concluded, the Panthers are scheduled to play next at the C-USA Championships on April 19-21.
Baseball
Despite a depleted roster and playing on the tail end of five games in four days, the FIU baseball team run-ruled visiting WKU 10-0 on Saturday to win three out of four and clinch the series. FIU used 10 freshmen in total against WKU, as the Panthers won their first C-USA series of the young season despite being down five starters from the opening day lineup. FIU travels to Miami (FL) on Wednesday, before returning home to host Charlotte on April 9-11.
Softball
Jessica Rivera continued her tear at the plate, hitting two homers against FAU to lead the Panthers past the Owls and earn the series win on the road. FIU took two of three from FAU, as Rivera hit her fifth homer this season which have came all in the last 11 games.
Brooklynn Linneman pitched two complete games for a pair of wins in the circle as she allowed just three runs. The Panthers are off until April 16-18, as FIU travels to Charlotte for the next C-USA series.
Beach Volleyball
The No. 14 FIU beach volleyball team swept St. Thomas (Fla.) and host-Florida Memorial this past Thursday. The victories put the Panthers at 19-5 for the 2021 season. The Panthers head to Tallahassee, Florida, for the Unconquered Invitational on April 9-10. FIU is set to face off against Coastal Carolina, North Florida, No. 11 Florida Atlantic and No. 2 Florida State during the two-day tournament.
Women's Tennis
The FIU women's tennis team stayed unbeaten as the Panthers defeated No. 28 Rice and USF at home this past weekend. The Panthers are now 9-0 on the year, which is their best start since 1994. The ranked-win over Rice was the program's highest since 2010. With Friday's match against No. 28 Rice on the line,
Andjela Skrobonja rallied to win six-straight games in the third set and clinch the 4-3 win for the Panthers. FIU will travel for the final match of the regular season on Saturday, April 10, as the Panthers face No. 16 UCF.
Men's Soccer
The FIU men's soccer team earned a draw with visiting Kentucky, as the Panthers stay unbeaten against the Wildcats in their last six matches.
Matias Barraza put FIU ahead 1-0 in the 33rd minute, after a beautiful pass from
Mauro Bravo set up the senior for his first goal of the season.
Johan Peñaranda continued his outstanding play between the posts, after earning nine saves on 19 shots faced. FIU will host South Carolina for the final home match of the spring slate, as the Panthers and Gamecocks battle on Saturday, April 10, at Noon. The contest will serve as Senior Day for the Panthers.
Track & Field
The FIU track & field team continued its strong spring campaign, with a pair of victories at the South Florida Invitational this past Friday and Saturday. On Friday in the men's action,
Eliseo Torres broke 15:00 in the 5000m for the first time in his career, taking the win in a field of 18 runners with a time of 14:53. The following day in the women's action,
Filippa Miller broke her own school record in the pole vault with a mark of 4.00m (13' 1.5''). The Panthers will be back in action on April 9-10 at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Coral Gables. Saturday's action will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
