MIAMI – FIU Athletics featured a total of eight programs post perfect yearly scores in the annual release of the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate (APR), which was announced on Tuesday.
FIU had all 16 athletic programs post above the required multi-year score of 930. Additionally, 11 of the 16 programs posted multi-year APR scores of 985 or higher.
The men's soccer, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's basketball, women's golf, women's tennis, women's indoor volleyball and the women's track and field programs each posted perfect APR yearly scores of 1,000 in the 2021-22 edition of the report.
Men's soccer posted a perfect score after one of the most successful seasons on the pitch in the program's history as it captured the American Athletic Conference Championship in its first season in the conference and went on to advance to the Sweet 16 of the 2022 NCAA Soccer Championship.
Women's golf posted a perfect score for the 12th consecutive reporting of APR, while women's tennis and women's indoor volleyball have tabbed a perfect mark for the last three years and women's cross country has posted perfect totals for each of the last two seasons.
A total of nine teams beat their sport's annual national average to further FIU's commitment to academic excellence.
The nine FIU programs to best the national average for their sports included men's cross country, men's soccer, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, women's tennis, softball, women's indoor volleyball and women's track and field.
The men's soccer and women's basketball programs finished 18 points ahead of its sport's national average to lead the way at FIU.
In addition, 10 FIU programs matched or improved their one-year score from the last year's APR release.
The 2023 report released by the NCAA features a four-year compilation of APR data from the 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn one (1) point for remaining eligible and one (1) point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success.
Throughout 19 years of the Academic Performance Program, more than 20,700 student-athletes have gone back to school to earn their degrees — earning points for their former team. For the high-profile sports of football, baseball, and men's and women's basketball, more than 10,657 former student-athletes have returned to college to complete their degrees. These student-athletes are typically not counted in the federal graduation rate or Graduation Success Rate calculations.
