NASHVILLE (February 9, 2024) -
Tyniece Barclay's victory in the shot put, Ane Martin's Spanish U20 indoor mile record, and
Valerie Lastra resetting her own mile school record highlighted a memorable Friday of action Friday for FIU at the Music City Challenge.
RESULTS
Barclay earned her first victory as a Panther with a throw of 13.32m on her sixth and final attempt. It reset her PR of 12.68m she threw at the RADD Track and Field Invite.
Lastra rewrote the mile school record she had just broken, finishing in 4:38.46 to place third in a total field of 115 athletes. Martin followed behind in 4:52.59, good for 27th and a new Spain U20 indoor mile record, breaking the mark which had stood for 25 years.
"We saw a lot of terrific performances across the board today," said head coach
Ryan Heberling. "We're looking for another good day tomorrow as we finish preparations for conference coming up."
In the triple jump, freshman
Danielle McGonigle's mark of 11.94m earned her fourth place and the current top spot in Conference USA.
Michaelle Valentin's 20.80m performance in the weight throw was a season best and also good for the top spot in Conference USA.
Arielle Ho also saw a fourth place finish in the high jump.
Action will continue Saturday morning with the women's 3000m.
