MIAMI (March 16, 2024) - FIU saw a number of athletes enter and climb the outdoor all-time top-five list on Saturday, culminating a successful opening weekend of the 2024 campaign.
Sophomore
Raynell Chambers ran a blistering 47.15 in the 400, setting a new personal best and tying the top time run in FIU outdoor history, which had been set by Sean Roach in 1999. Chambers earned a second place finish among 14 competitors.
In the high jump, freshmen
Alex Gabossy and Jeremy Perlin burst onto the stage with terrific performances, with Gabossy's mark of 2.11m second all-time in FIU outdoor history, just behind
Chris Sullivan's 2.12m jump in 2017. Perlin entered the top-five with a leap of 2.06m, which puts him in the fourth spot all-time at FIU.
"We saw a lot of tremendous efforts today, and a number were from athletes just getting started in our program," said head coach
Ryan Heberling. "This was a great way to start the outdoor season strong."
In the women's 800, senior
Leonarda Farkas ran a personal best of 2:14.74, taking 9th in a field of 18, and just outside the FIU top-five. In the women's javelin,
Christiana Ellina and
Hannah Jansen placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Panthers will hit the road next week to compete in the UCF Invite in Orlando.
