MIAMI (April 9, 2016) – Week four of FIU's 2016 Spring Camp concluded on Saturday with the team's third scrimmage from Ocean Bank Field at FIU Stadium.
Saturday mornings scrimmage lasted approximately 18 series and showcased some nice plays on both sides of the ball.
The offense scored five touchdowns and converted a 34-yard field goal by
Austin Taylor on the day, while the defense recorded six three-and-outs and two interceptions.
Alex McGough connected with
Julian Williams for a 36-yard touchdown pass for the offense's first score during the fifth drive of the day. McGough, who was picked off by
Emmanuel Lubin during an earlier drive, also found fullback
Jacob Kraut for a one-yard score. McGough finished the afternoon with an unofficial 151 yards passing.
Prior to the 36-yard score by McGough to Williams, the defense had the better of the offense, forcing a punt in each of the first four drives. Plays such as Lubin's pick and a big stop behind the line of scrimmage by
Sage Lewis gave the defense the early edge.
After two-straight three-and-outs by the defense. The offense responded with Taylor's 34-yard field goal during the eighth drive of the scrimmage.
Following an
Austin Maloney score from 21 yards out, the defense clamped down, quieting the offense for the next two drives.
Vontarius West notched a sack for a nine-yard loss to highlight the defense's play during that span.
The next two drives belonged to the offense as McGough found Kraut from a yard out in drive number 12 and
Christian Alexander completed a three-yard pass to
Collin Olsen during the 13
th drive of the day.
A three-and-out ensued on the next drive as pass breakups by
Treyvon Williams and
Shermarke Spence coupled with a coverage sack of C. Alexander quickly ended the offense's attempt to move the ball. The defense followed that up with a pick six by
Brad-Hyman Muhammad. The cornerback intercepted a pass by
Maurice Alexander and took it 34 yards for the defensive score.
After a turnover-on-downs, the offense came out strong as McGough found Williams for 31 yards. However, a pair of incomplete passes and a false start coupled with a sack by
Fermin Silva (nine-yard loss) halted the drive.
The offense closed out the day with a 16-yard touchdown pass from M. Alexander to
Shawn Abrams. The drive, which started on the offense's own 35-yard line, was highlighted by a 44-yard completion from M. Alexander to
Adrien Francois.
Unofficially, Williams and Francois led all receivers with 67 yards and 55 yards, respectively. On the ground Maloney posted 31 yards, while Olsen had 25 and
