MIAMI (October 16, 2017) – FIU junior defensive end
Fermin Silva (Miami, Florida/Miami Central) has been named the Conference USA Football Defensive Player of the Week, for the week ending Oct. 14, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. The honor is the first of Silva's career.
Silva had eight solo tackles and three unassisted tackles in FIU's 23-10 win over Tulane on Saturday. In addition, Silva recorded two sacks, three tackles for a loss (-13) and four quarterback hurries. His second of the two sacks came on fourth-and-eight on the FIU 17-yard line with 2:24 left in the game, forcing the Green Wave to turn the ball over on downs. His two sacks also equaled a single-game career-high.
On the year, Silva is sixth on the team in tackles with 23 (19 solo) and leads the team in sacks with three, resulting in 13 lost yards for opposing offenses, and tackles for loss with nine (-24), which is also good enough for fourth in C-USA.
This is the second weekly C-USA honor for the Panthers this season. Punter
Stone Wilson (Nokomis, Florida/IMG Academy) earned the C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week honor for the week ending Sept. 30.
Following its impressive 23-10 win last Saturday over Tulane, FIU will get to enjoy its bye week before getting back on the field at Marshall on Oct. 28. That game will be broadcast live by Stadium on Facebook.
