MIAMI (October 30, 2017) – FIU senior cornerback Brad Muhammad (St. Petersburg, Florida/Admiral Farragut Academy) has been named the Conference USA Football Defensive Player of the Week, for the week ending Oct. 28, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. The honor is the first of Muhammad's career.
Muhammad set a career-high with 10 tackles and recorded two interceptions in the 41-30 road win at Marshall. He intercepted a third quarter pass and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown, FIU's first pick-six since Isaiah Brown at Old Dominion on Nov. 26, 2016. Muhammad picked off his second pass of the game in the fourth quarter. It was the first time that a Panther had two interceptions in a game since Richard Leonard at UAB on Sept. 27, 2014. Muhammad's six first-half tackles were key in helping FIU hold Marshall to a season-low seven points in the opening half. Muhammad's two INT's accounted for two of the season-high three turnovers for the Panthers, the first time all season FIU won the turnover battle in a game.
On the year, Muhammad is seventh on the team in tackles with 27 (21 solo) and leads the team with four interceptions. He also has four pass breakups. Muhammad is tied for the C-USA lead in interceptions now with four and ranks fourth in passes defended (8).
This is the third weekly C-USA honor for the Panthers this season. Punter Stone Wilson (Nokomis, Florida/IMG Academy) earned the C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week honor for the week ending Sept. 30. Defensive End Fermin Silva earned the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor for the week ending Oct. 14.
FIU (5-2, 3-1 C-USA) returns to Riccardo Silva Stadium Saturday for a C-USA cross-divisional game against UTSA (5-2, 2-2 C-USA). Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and the Panthers will celebrate Homecoming. That game will be broadcast live by Stadium on Facebook.
