Offense Takes 2017 FIU Spring Game, 17-14

MIAMI (April 7, 2017) – The FIU football team wrapped up this year's Spring Game with 17-14 outcome in favor of the Panthers' offense on Friday night from Riccardo Silva Stadium. 
 
During the team's 14th practice of this year's spring camp, FIU held its annual Spring Game, pitting the offense versus the defense. Defensive points were awarded for three-and-outs and turnovers, while the offense scored on traditional touchdowns and field goals.
 
Alex McGough finished the night completing 14-of-21 for 202 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown pass was to Thomas Owens for 73 yards. Owens finished the night with two catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. Austin Maloney led all receivers with five catches for 56 yards. In all, 11 Panthers caught at least one pass.
 
On the ground, Anthony Jones was one of 11 Panthers to carry the ball at least once, gaining a team-high 30 yards on five carries and one touchdown. Jones scored on a 15-yard run. The offense scored its 17th point with a 30-yard field goal by Jose Borregales.
 
The defense was led by Anthony Wint and Andrew Brown, who garnered four tackles apiece. Fermin Silva notched a game-high two sacks, while Chris White forced the game's only turnover with an interception late in the game. His pick pulled the defense to within three points, 17-14.
 
The Panthers will close out spring camp with the team's final practice on Tuesday, April 11.

The 2017 FIU football season will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 2, when the Panthers travel to Orlando, Florida, to take on the UCF Knights.

FIU's 2017 schedule is highlighted with games against Boca Raton Bowl and 2016 C-USA champion WKU, Popeyes Bahamas Bowl champion Old Dominion, AutoNation Cure Bowl participant UCF, Foster Farms Bowl participant Indiana, Hawai'i Bowl participant Middle Tennessee and Gildan New Mexico Bowl participant UTSA. In addition, the Panthers will face Rice, Charlotte, Marshall and Florida Atlantic as well as first-time opponents Alcorn State and Tulane.
