With more than half of its roster comprised of new players the FIU baseball team has such a different look this coming season that you might need to hand out "Hello, My Name is" stickers at the FIU ballpark. Since there are so many new faces, from now until Opening Day on Feb. 16 when Missouri comes to town for a three-game series, we'll profile the newest Panthers as well as the returning FIU ballplayers.
Andres Nunez, RHP, Redshirt Junior
What were you doing last baseball season?
AN:
I was rehabbing from a lat injury. I just started my throwing program when last season started. I hurt my lat in the last game of the 2016 regular season against Southern Miss.
What is your best baseball experience?
AN:
Probably my junior year of high school winning the state championship. I pitched a complete game to help my school, Archbishop McCarthy, win its fourth straight state championship.
Give me an example of a game or a moment that makes baseball such a great game.
AN:
Watching Dee Gordon lead off the first game after Jose Fernandez's death with a home run. That was pretty amazing. That was an emotional moment.
Tell me something away from baseball about you that someone might find interesting?
AN:
I live on a farm in Southwest Ranches in Broward. My grandparents are farmers. We have five horses, cows, goats, chickens and sheep.
FIU coach Mervyl Melendez says about Nunez:
"Nunez will be a midweek starter at times, closer at times and set-up at times. He will be used in multiple roles and he's looked really strong on the mound."
