PORT CHARLOTTE -
Logan Allen allowed no earned runs over six innings and FIU scored timely runs to defeat Western Michigan, 4-2, in a six-inning rain-shortened game at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte.
FIU's second game of Saturday's two-opponent doubleheader with George Mason was postponed due to rain. The Panthers and the Patriots will play a doubleheader Sunday at 3 p.m. from FIU's Infinity Insurance Park.
With the win the Panthers are now 7-7 while the Broncos dropped to 8-6.
For the third straight start, Allen, a freshman left-hander, was locked in. After the Broncos scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, Allen retired 11 of the next 13 batters.
Allen (2-1) scattered six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out eight.
In his last three starts, Allen has pitched 18 innings, allowed two earned runs, walked just one batter and struck out 25.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, FIU got three straight singles from
Javier Valdes,
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. and
Jose Garcia to tie the score. Garcia knocked home Valdes with the tying run.
In the bottom of the third inning with rain looming nearby, the Panthers scored three runs to wrest control of the game.
Derek Cartaya led off the inning with a single and scored on a double by Valdes into the left field corner to snap the tie.
Hampton singled to move Valdes to third base. Garcia followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Adan Fernandez doubled home Hampton and FIU led 4-1.
Valdes was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Hampton was 3 for 3 and
Juan Teixeira was 2 for 3, including his second triple of the season.
FIU returns home Sunday to begin a three-game series with George Mason. Sunday's doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
