Austin Shenton named MVP of 2018 Cape Cod League championship series

FIU junior third baseman Austin Shenton was named the MVP of the 2018 Cape Cod Baseball League championship series after leading the Wareham Gatemen to a sweep of the Chatham Anglers on Monday afternoon.

Shenton hit .522 with three home runs and 12 RBI in the playoffs. The left-handed hitting Shenton was 12 for 23 in the Cape postseason. In the championship series Shenton was 3 for 8 with a double and six RBI.

"I was honored to be part of this team and this class organization of the Wareham Gatemen," Shenton said. "This team really meshed well and really it was a total team effort that we were the last team standing when it was all said and done."

During the Cape regular season Shenton hit .349 with four home runs and 30 RBI. Shenton was third in the league in hitting with the .349 average and second in RBI with 30.

Shenton saved his best for the stretch run of the Cape league when he orchestrated a 10-game hitting streak to finish the regular season and continued it in the postseason. Shenton hit safely in 40 of the 51 games he played in for the Gatemen.

Last season Shenton led FIU with a .344 average and 11 doubles. He also hit nine home runs and drove in 29.

Shenton wasn't the only Panther to win a summer league championship.

Over in the Valley Baseball League, FIU outfielder Adan Fernandez, infielder Kobe Lopez and pitcher Jan Figueroa helped the New Market Rebels to the VBL championship series win over Charlottesville.

Fernandez hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the championship game to snap a 5-5 tie. Kobe Lopez hit .307 and had a team-leading nine stolen bases.

FIU infielder Derek Cartaya was an integral part of the West Boca Snappers run to the South Florida Collegiate League championship. Cartaya hit .296 with a team-leading 11 stolen bases for the Snappers.

West Boca swept the Palm Beach Diamond Ducks in the championship series.
