MIAMI - With cloudy skies looming over the FIU Tennis Courts, the No. 32 FIU women's tennis team (2-0) outlasted the Troy Trojans (1-1) and the rain in route to a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon.
For the second-straight match, the Golden Panthers swept all three doubles matches to take the doubles point, giving FIU a 1-0 advantage going into singles competition.
The FIU team of sophomore Chrissie Serendi and senior Priscilla Castillo clinched the doubles point for the Golden Panthers at the No. 3 spot with their 8-2 victory over Stephanie Vieira and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega of Troy.
In singles competition, junior Liset Brito, Serendi, Castillo and senior Maria Vallasciani all picked up victories on the afternoon. Off the court first for FIU, Brito made quick work of Karoline Grymel at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-2. On court No. 3 Serendi clinched the match for the Golden Panthers when she defeated Leonie Guijt in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
The Golden Panthers will return to the courts on Friday, January 29 when they take on the No. 23 SMU Mustangs in Gainesville, Fla., as part of the ITA Indoor Championships. First serve is set for 1 p.m. The No. 8 Florida Gators will play the No. 64 BYU Cougars at 10 a.m. The winners of each match will go on to play each other at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
