FIU Suffers 7-0 Loss to No. 6 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. (Feb. 5, 2012) -- The FIU women's tennis team (1-5) suffered a 7-0 loss to the No. 6-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts in Athens, Ga.

Georgia opened the match with a sweep of the doubles competition as Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist (No. 2) defeated junior Rita Maisak and freshman Sarah McLean, 8-0, Lauren Herring and Kate Fuller (No. 60) downed sophomore Giulietta Boha and freshman Karyn Guttormsen, 8-4, and Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase defeated freshman Nina Djordjevic and senior Lisa Johnson, 8-1.

The Panthers trailed 1-0 heading into singles competition, looking to regroup. However, UGA won all six singles matches to defeat FIU, 7-0.

McLean was defeated by Gullickson (No. 2), 6-0, 6-2, Maisak fell to Herring (No. 52), 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-6, Johnson lost to Gilchrist, 6-1, 6-0, Boha fell to Kowase (No. 22), 6-2, 6-1, Guttormsen lost to Fuller (No. 56), 7-5, 6-4, and Djordjevic lost to Alina Jerjomina, 6-1, 6-1.

The loss extends FIU's current losing streak to three contests, and marks the second loss for the Panthers versus the Bulldogs this season. The match marked the fifth of the season pitting FIU against a nationally-ranked team (1-4).

FIU will next travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face New Mexico State as part of the Lady Raider Shootout on Friday, Feb. 10, hosted by Texas Tech University. The match is set for 3:00 p.m. ET.
