MIAMI (March 14, 2012) --- The FIU women's tennis team (4-10) defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (1-11) in dominating fashion, 7-0, on Wednesday, March 14, at the FIU Tennis Courts.
Sweeping both the doubles and singles portions of the contest, FIU improved its home record to 2-1 on the year.
The Panthers took the doubles point as the team of junior Rita Maisak and freshman Sarah McLean defeated Alexus Coats and Kate Lanier, 8-4. The duo of sophomore Giulietta Boha and freshman Karyn Guttormsen downed Elja van Berlo and Alex Bradley, 8-6, and seniors Christine Seredni and Lisa Johnson blew by Mackenzie Oskin and Moorea William, 8-0.
In singles play, each of FIU's six positions won in straight set. Johnson led things off, making quick work of Oskin, 6-0, 6-2. McLean quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lanier. The Panthers clinched the victory following Guttormsen's 6-0, 6-4 victory over Williams. Maisak downed van Berlo, 7-5, 6-2, and Seredni defeated Bradley, 6-1, 6-2. Boha completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Frances Askew.
The win improved the Panthers to 4-10 on the year and marked the 50th-career victory for Head Coach Melissa Appleabaum-Dall'au.
The Panthers will next host No. 21 Yale on Friday, March 16. The match is slated for 1:00 p.m.
