MIAMI (March 9, 2012) --- Playing in its first home match of the season, the FIU women's tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory over the Penn Quakers (4-5) on Friday, March 9.
Senior Christine Seredni clinched the match for the Panthers (3-9) with her first singles victory of the 2012 season, defeating Srinidhi Raghavan, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Karyn Guttormsen won her fourth-straight singles match during Friday's contest, while sophomore Giulietta Boha notched her fourth singles victory this spring season.
FIU took an early 1-0 lead, winning two of the three doubles matches to start the day. Seredni along with senior Lisa Johnson made quick work of the Penn duo of Stephanie Do and Emma Whitfield, 8-2. Guttormsen and Boha followed up with an 8-2 win over Alex Ion and Daniela DePaoli. The Quakers won the final doubles match, 8-6 as junior Rita Maisak and freshman Sarah McLean dropped an 8-6 decision to Sol Eskeanzi. Sol and Jules Rodin.
In singles play, Penn tied the match at 1-1 as Ion defeated Johnson, 6-3, 6-0. The Panthers regained the lead, 2-1, as Guttormsen defeated DePaoli, 6-4, 6-1. The match was tied up for a second time, 2-2, as Masiak fell to Eskeanzi, 6-2, 6-1. Boha gave FIU a 3-2 advantage, defeating Whitfield, 6-2, 6-2. Seredni's match clinched the contest for the Panthers, 4-2. McLean batted Do, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), suffering her eighth loss of the spring and wrapping the match up at 4-3.
The win improved the Panthers to 3-9 on the year and dropped the Quakers to 4-5 in 2012.
The Panthers will host Ole Miss next on Tuesday, March 13. The match is slated for 1:00 p.m.
