MIAMI (April 6, 2012) --- Tied at 3-3, it came down to the final match of the contest. Fresno State's Anne Susdorf defeated sophomore Giulietta Boha, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, as the Panthers (5-14) lost to the Bulldogs (11-6), 4-3, on Friday, April 6, at the FIU Tennis Courts.
Prior to the match, seniors Lisa Johnson and Christine Seredni were honored as they were playing in the final home contest of their FIU careers.
The No. 49-ranked Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead, sweeping the doubles portion of the contest. Laura Pola and Marianne Jodoin defeated junior Rita Maisak and freshman Sarah McLean, 8-2, Melissa McQueen and Tanya Murtagh downed Boha and freshman Karyn Guttormsen, 8-7 (7-1), and Bianca Modoc and Aishwarya Agrawal defeated Seredni and Johnson, 8-3.
Fresno State extended its lead to 3-0, winning the first two singles matches, as Maisak fell to Jodoin (No. 47), 6-0, 6-1, and Johnson lost to McQueen, 6-3, 6-2.
Guttormsen got the Panthers on the board with her ninth singles victory of the year, defeating Pola, 6-4, 6-3. McLean then won her third-straight singles match to cut the Bulldog lead to 3-2, as the Miami, Fla., native defeated Agrawal, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Seredni tied the match at three-all with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 defeat of Murtagh. Fresno State clinched the match as Boha fell to Susdorf, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
With the loss, the Panthers end the 2012 regular season with a 5-14 record having lost four-straight home matches. The match marked the 12th of the season in which FIU faced a ranked opponent.
The Panthers will next travel Denton, Texas, to take part in the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Tournament beginning on April 19.
