Panthers Fall to Hoyas, 4-3

MIAMI (March 6, 2013) – The FIU women's tennis team (2-7) fell to the Georgetown Hoyas (6-3), 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the FIU Tennis Courts.

The Panthers got behind early, losing the doubles portion of the match with junior Giulietta Boha and freshman Carlotta Orlando dropping an 8-5 decision to GU's Kelly Cornolli and Madeline Jaeger at No. 2 doubles. The tandem of senior Magali Holt and freshman Michelle Sabado also lost to Michelle Pratt and Sophie Panarese, 8-7 (3) at No. 3. The FIU pair of senior Rita Maisak and Aleksandra Trifunovic defeated Georgetown's Victoria Sekely and Liz Hamlin, 8-4, at No. 1.

FIU responded in singles play with two-straight points as Trifunovic, at the No. 3 position, defeated Jaeger, 6-2, 6-3, and Maisak, at the No. 2, won over Cornolli, 6-2, 6-3. The Hoyas tied the match a 2-2 as Holt fell to Hamlin, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, at No. 5.

Orlando then gave FIU a 3-2 advantage with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win over Sekely at No. 1. However, Georgetown picked up the last two points as Sabado fell to Taylor Perz, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-0 at No. 6 and Boha lost to Panarese, 1-6, 7-6 (13-11), 6-2 at No. 4.

FIU will next host the Michigan State Spartans on Thursday, March 7, at the FIU Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET.
