FIU Women’s Tennis Falls to Troy in Home Opener, 4-3

MIAMI (Jan. 29, 2016) – The FIU women's tennis team (1-1) suffered a 4-3 loss to the Troy Trojans (2-1) on Friday afternoon in the Panthers' home opener.
 
Up 3-1 with three singles matches to go, FIU could not hold on, for the team's first loss of the season.
 
Troy jumped out to a 1-0 lead, taking two of the afternoon's three doubles matches. The tandem of freshman Maryna Veksler and junior Nina Nagode defeated Troy's Hannah Siezer and Alicia Rodriguez, 6-3, however, the Trojans won a pair of 6-4 matches to take the point. Junior Carlotta Orlando and redshirt freshman Andrea Lazaro fell to Jiayuan Xue and Efrikiya Herlina while sophomore Nerma Caluk and Kaitlin Brozovich lost to Sanae Ohta and Nancy Karaky.
 
The Panthers responded in singles play taking the first two matches for a 2-1 lead. Veksler downed Xue at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-3, following by Lazaro, who won a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Karaky at the No. 5 spot. Nagode gave FIU a 3-1 advantage with her 12th singles win of the season, defeating Siezer at the No. 2 position.
 
Troy tied the match as Brozovich lost to Luisa Ferrauti, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), and Caluk fell to Herlina, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. The Trojans clinched the match as Ohta defeated Orlando, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
 
The Panthers will next travel to DeLand, Fla., to take on the Stetson Hatters on Saturday, Feb. 6. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
