OXFORD, Miss — No. 24 Ole Miss used a four-run sixth inning to break a tie with FIU and knock off the Panthers, 7-4 in game two of a three-game opening series at Swayze Field.
After FIU rallied from down 3-0 to tie the score in the top of the fourth inning, the Rebels got a go-ahead RBI single by Kyle Watson off FIU starter
Chris Mourelle (0-1) to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Two batters later with the bases loaded, Will Golsan delivered the key hit to give Ole Miss breathing room. Golsan lined a double into the left center field gap to clear the bases. Ole Miss led 7-3.
The Panthers did not let an early 3-0 deficit after the first inning discourage them. FIU scored its first run in the top of the second inning courtesy of three walks issued by Ole Miss starter
Chad Smith.
Eddie Silva had an infield single in between two walks.
Kenny Meimerstorf drove in the first FIU run on a bases loaded walk.
In the top of the fourth,
Zach Files led off with a single to center. After advancing to second base on a ground out, Files scored on a single by Silva to right center.
Nick Day then brought Silva home on a line drive double down the left field line to tie score 3-3.
Mourelle went 5 1/3 innings, allowed six hits, seven runs and walked seven (one intentional). FIU relievers
Dominic LoBrutto and
Nate Pearson retired all eight batters that the pair faced.
Files was 2 for 3 with a double. Silva was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
FIU will try to avoid the sweep against Ole Miss Sunday afternoon in the series finale at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on the
FIU Sports Radio Network beginning at 12:55 p.m.
