MIAMI (Feb. 26, 2016) -- A pair of three-run homers from junior
Stephanie Texeira (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep), including a walk-off in the bottom of the sixth, coupled with a complete-game two-hitter from freshman
Abby Summers (Weston, Missouri), were the highlights of FIU's 10-1 win in six innings over visiting Central Connecticut State Friday night to end day one of the Felsberg Invitational at the FIU Softball Stadium.
Â
FIU avenges last night's loss to CCSU and improves to 9-4 overall. The Blue Devils fall to 1-2.
Â
CCSU got an unearned run during the first at bat on a pair of FIU errors, but that was all that Summers and the defense would allow to score in the contest.
Â
A walk to junior
Ashley Leon (Miami, Florida / Auburn University) started the FIU bottom half of the first. She stole second and later scored on a two-out single to left center from junior center fielder
Gabby Spallone (Miami, Florida / Palmetto HS).
Â
The game remained tied at one until FIU scratched across six runs, the first three coming on the deep shot to right field from Texeira, a two-out blast in the fifth. Following the round-tripper, FIU had two more doubles, a walk and a single to score three more runs and push the lead out to 7-1.
Â
Summers allowed two baserunners in the sixth, including her only walk of the night, but she navigated the trouble and kept the Blue Devils off the board to the sixth.
Â
In that last frame, a first-career single from freshman
Natalia Rivera (Tampa, Florida / Thomas Jefferson HS) got the inning started. Leon reached base for the fourth time in the game with an infield single, which set up Texeira for her second blast of the game and seventh of the season to walk off the win.
Â
Texeira finished with three hits and six RBI and leads the team with 21 for the season. Leon scored three runs for the Panthers.
Â
The win pushed Summers' record to 4-1. She struck out four Blue Devils in the game. The loss went to Emily Sargent, which is now 1-1. She allowed all 12 Panthers hits, allowing nine earned runs. She struck out four and walked three.
The Panthers will play a pair of games in conclude day two of the Invitational on Saturday. These same two teams will meet at 4 p.m. before the Panthers host Delaware for the third time this season. That game begins at 6:30 p.m.
