MIAMI (Feb. 28, 2016) -- Freshman
Abby Summers (Weston, Missouri) tossed her third complete game of the year and senior catcher
Aleima Lopez (Deltona, Florida / Deltona HS) hit a two-run homer early as FIU softball finished its weekend with a 6-1 win over Siena, avenging a Friday loss to the Saints at the Felsberg Invitational at Felsberg Field at the FIU Softball Stadium Sunday. FIU improves to 11-5 on the season, with the Saints slipping to an even 5-5 on the year.
Lopez hit her home run in the second inning after a walk to third baseman
Dani Mowry (Cocoa, Florida / Space Coast HS) to start the inning. It was her second of the year.
Â
Summers mowed through the order the first time through, retiring all nine batters to start the contest. A leadoff single in the fourth was the first baserunner she saw, but the runner was caught stealing after a tight throw from Lopez.
Â
A one-out double in the fifth was the first baserunner to reach second, but Summers held the Saints scoreless through five and the offense went back to work for FIU.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, FIU got four runs on just two hits. Shortstop
A.J. Belans (Hollywood, Florida / American Heritage HS) reached on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the frame. Mowry reached on a fielder's choice and stole both second base and home. Lopez walked and stole second, scoring on a double from outfielder
Deven Kennedy (Montgomery, Alabama) Kennedy was the fourth runner to cross home plate, after an RBI single from pinch hitter
Michaela Mills (Hastings, Minnesota).
Â
The run in the sixth was unearned against Summers after a pair of fielding errors on the Panthers in the frame.
Â
For the game, Summers scattered four hits over seven innings, tying a season-high with six strikeouts in the game. She allowed just one walk, in the sixth inning.
Â
FIU will leave home for the first time next weekend, heading up to Gainesville and the UF Invitational, hosted by Florida. The Panthers will first play at 2:15 p.m. on Friday, taking on Illinois State.
