GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 5, 2016) – The FIU softball team (11-8) could not overcome six first-inning runs and lost a 10-0 battle against the unbeaten and top-ranked University of Florida Gators (20-0) in day two of the Aquafina UF Invitational.
The Gators wasted no time in scoring during the first inning, with a home run and later back-to-back RBI-singles to force the Panthers to pull freshman
Abby Summers (Weston, Missouri) from the circle and send in freshman
Hunter Scharf (Lake Worth, Florida / Grandview Prep HS). A passed ball and a sacrifice fly gave the Gators another two runs before the close of the inning.
Florida put up two in the second and third to complete the scoring. FIU managed two hits, two walks and two hit batters as their baserunners in the contest.
Summers drops to 5-2, allowing five hits and six runs, five of which were earned, in the first inning. The Gators' winning pitcher, Kelly Barnhill improves her record to 7-0, only allowing the two FIU hits.
The Panthers return to action later this evening as they face the FAMU Rattlers. First pitch is slated for 6:45 p.m.
