HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (March 5, 2016) – The No. 48-ranked FIU women's tennis team (9-1) won its eighth-straight match with a 6-1 victory over the VCU Rams (3-7) on Saturday from the Huntington Tennis Club in Huntington, W.Va.
The Panthers took the first point of the match, claiming two doubles decisions as freshman
Maryna Veksler and junior
Nina Nagode defeated Olga Barshcheuskaya and Sofia Segerfors, 6-1, and sophomore
Nerma Caluk and senior
Kaitlin Brozovich downed Yana Morar and Magda Aubets, 6-2.
The Panthers proceeded to win five of six singles contests, to win the match 6-1. Caluk clinched the match for FIU with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Morar. The win was the eighth-straight for the second-year Panther. Also picking up wins for FIU were senior
Carlotta Orlando (6-2, 6-2 over Darya Berezhnaya), redshirt freshman
Andrea Lazaro (1-6, 6-2, 6-1 over Jania Braun), Brozovich (6-2, 7-5 over Segerfors) and Veksler (6-1, 6-1 over Barshcheuskaya).
The win improves FIU to 7-0 in matches away from the FIU Tennis Courts and extends the team's winning streak to the program's longest since claiming nine-straight during the 2011 season.
FIU will return home to host Butler on Tuesday, March 8. First serve is set for noon.
