No. 26 FIU Rolls Past No. 49 VCU, 4-0

MIAMI (March 12, 2017) – For the second-straight match and the seventh time this season, the FIU women's tennis team (12-1) shut out its opponent as the Panthers rolled past the VCU Rams, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon from the FIU Tennis Courts.

The No. 26th-ranked Panthers claimed their 10th-straight victory and third over a nationally-ranked team this season.

In doubles action, the pair of Maryna Veksler and Ulyana Grib defeated Nourmea Witmus and Darya Berezhnaya, 6-1, followed by the duo of Mina Markovic and Gabriela Ferreira topping Magda Auberts and Gabriela Araujo, 6-2.

Taking the doubles point, FIU opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory for Grib over Araujo. The win pushed the FIU lead to 2-0 and was the 15th victory of the season for the first-year Panther. Markovic won her third singles match of the week with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Aubets to give the Panthers a 3-0 advantage. Markovic also earned her 15th singles win of the season.

Joining Grib and Markovic at the 15-win plateau on the year was No. 28 Andrea Lazaro, who clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Janina Bruan. The native of Barcelona, Spain, improved to 9-1 at the number-one position this season and increased her career mark in dual matches to 26-2.

The 10-match winning streak matches the season-best from a year ago and is the longest winning streak since the 2009 season, during which the Panthers won 13-straight.

Improving to 7-0 at home in 2017, the Panthers will next host Georgia Southern on Wednesday, March 15. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.
