Markovic Rallies for Match-Clinching Point in 4-3 Win over Penn

MIAMI (March 8, 2017) – With the match tied at 3-3, junior Mina Markovic rallied from 5-1 down in the third set to lead FIU to a 4-3 win over the Penn Quakers on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The win improved FIU to 10-1 overall and 4-0 at home this season. Ranked No. 26 in the latest Oracle/ITA Women's Tennis National Rankings, the Panthers picked up their eighth-straight win on Wednesday.  
 
FIU took an early 1-0 lead, winning the doubles portion of the match as Ulyana Grib and Maryna Veksler defeated Ria Vaidya and Lina Qostal, 6-2, and Markovic and Gabriela Ferreira downed Marta Kowalska and Luba Vazhenina, 6-3.
 
The Quakers (4-6) responded winning two-straight singles contests to take a 2-1 lead. Kowalska defeated Nerma Caluk, 6-3, 6-4, and Qostal topped Grib, 6-4, 7-5.
 
FIU tied the match at 2-all following a 6-4, 6-4 win for Nina Nagode over Vazhenina. Penn regained the lead as Kana Daniel defeated Andrea Lazaro, 6-4, 7-5.  Veksler evened the match, winning her 16th match of the season, defeating Ashley Zhu, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.
 
Markovic scored the match-clinching point, defeating Vaidya, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
 
The Panthers will next host the Boston Terriers on Friday, March 10. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.
