CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Oct. 14, 2018) – After three full days of tennis, 27 matches, and an hour and 36 minutes in rain delays. The Panthers wrapped up a successful weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Freshman
Kamila Umarova and senior
Maryna Veksler took home the No.1 doubles flight main draw trophy, while freshman
Basak Akbas, was named the winner of the No.2 singles flight main draw.
"I was very pleased to see improvement in doubles play. This was the first time Kamila and Maryna were paired together and they put in a great effort," head coach
Katarina Petrovic said.
For the last two weeks, the freshman-senior duo worked on specific techniques which showed through in this weekend's performance. They came out victorious in all three matches, including a double header on Saturday which consisted of match ups between Stetson's Danel Ashirova and Lucie Renault (6-2) and Florida Atlantic's Jemi Aguilar and Natalia Boltinskaya (6-0). In the final day of the tournament, they sealed the deal when they defeated UCF's Ksenia Kuznetsova and Rebeka Stolmar (6-2) and walked away with a trophy.
Akbas, dazzled on the court all weekend, winning all four of her matches for the No.2 flight crown. In her final match of the weekend, Akbas went up against FGCU's Sofia Perez, the junior came into the tournament as a seasoned collegiate player with an impressive resume. However, her accolades were no threat to the rookie, who defeated her in a hard fought 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (10-5) match.
"Basak had some tough competition today and it was very impressive to see her fight and win the match," Petrovic said.
The Panthers -- who appeared in 27 matches combined -- ended with a 17-10 record overall registering a 13-6 mark in singles and 4-4 in doubles play.
