HILTON HEAD ISLAND, South Carolina (Sept. 28, 2018) –
Kamila Umarova made it all the way to the quarterfinals at the Hilton Head Island 15K, before her two-match winning streak was snapped by Justine Mikulskytė.
The rookie entered the tournament with a direct berth into the main draw on Tuesday, Sept. 25, where she took on Sophie Williams, and defeated the youngster in two sets (6-3,6-0).
She then extended her win streak in the 16th round where she fought off Ksenia Kuznetsova (5-7,6-2,6-3).
However, her winning streak came to an end on Friday, Sept. 28, when she faced 22-year-old, Lithuanian, Justine Mikulskytė (1-6 7-6(6) 1-6).
"I appreciate FIU for the opportunity to take part in this kind of tournament. I traveled to Hilton Head with my team and coaches, so without them it would not have been possible," said Umarova.
This is just the beginning for the Uzbekistan native. As an incoming freshman and top tennis recruit with a world ranking of 754, she has already begun to make extraordinary strides and turned heads in South Carolina.
"I know what I have to improve, now I am going to keep working hard and making progress so I can see more results," Umarova said.
To be a part of a quarterfinals in any pro tournament is a privilege, boasts head coach
Katarina Petrovic. "Kamila worked hard in the weeks leading up to the tournament, now we are just going to focus on her consistency and shot selection moving forward, but I have no doubt that she will make those improvements for upcoming tournaments."
Umarova was not alone in the Hilton Head appearance. Accompanied by teammates
Paulina Bakaite, Sandra Bozinovic, and
Basak Akbas who all participated in the event and supported her in her quarterfinal debut.
The women's tennis team will resume fall play at the Bedford Cup. The tournament, which will be hosted at the University of Miami's Neil Schiff Tennis Center, is scheduled to begin on Friday, Oct. 12-14.
