Akbas Named C-USA Female Athlete of the Week

Women's Tennis, freshman star Basak Akbas is recognized by C-USA.

MIAMI (March 6, 2019) – FIU Women's Tennis player, Freshman Basak Akbas has been named Conference USA Female Athlete of the Week, announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon.

The Freshman has stunned since the start of her Panther career. Basak currently holds a 12-2 record overall in singles play and is 8-4 in doubles.

The young talent has been a dominate, consistent force for FIU. Of the last nine singles matches, six of them ended in victories, the remainder unfinished.

The recognition follows her outstanding performance this weekend when she posted a 5-0 record to help push the Panthers to their fifth consecutive win.

In doubles play against Marshall on Friday (March 1), the freshman-duo of Akbas and Kamila Umarova cliched doubles point with 6-3 victory over Ann Smith and Daniela Dankanych. She later clinched the win for FIU with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in singles over Daniela Dankanych.

Against Yale on Saturday (March 2), Akbas and Umarova posted a ranked victory as the Panther tandem downed No. 52 ranked Samantha Martinelli and Jessie Gong. The rookie also won her singles match against Jessie Wang, 6-4, 6-3.

To close out the weekend, on Sunday against C-USA oppnent, North Texas, Basak Akbas won 6-4, 6-2 over Nidhi Surapeneni.

UP NEXT
Basak and the rest of the Panther squad is back in action tomorrow when they host the Charlotte 49ers at 1 p.m.
