HOUSTON (April 3, 2019) – The FIU baseball team dropped the opener of the Texas road swing on Wednesday night by a score of 5-4 to Houston.
The Panthers sit at 11-18 on the season, while Houston improves to 16-13.
Fred Villarreal pitched the top of the ninth and was given the win when the Cougars scored in the home half of the inning.
Christian Dearman suffered the loss.
Logan Allen led the Panthers offensively going 3-for-4 with a double.
Austin Shenton finished the night with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs.
Adan Fernandez added two more hits and a RBI.
FIU answered Houston's run in the bottom of the first with Fernandez's fifth home run on the season. Fernandez not only tied himself for the team lead with homers, but also jump started a four-run inning for the Panthers.
Allen singled off the Houston pitcher to continue the rally and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Juan Teixeira walked before
Kaeber Rog singled to left center to bring home Allen. Shenton drove in Rog and Teixeira with his own single to center and push the FIU lead to 4-1.
Houston scored one in the second and two in the fourth to tie the game at four-all before a hit by pitch came around to score in the ninth.
