MIAMI (June 10, 2019) – FIU men's basketball Head Coach
Jeremy Ballard continues to beef up the Panthers' front court, announcing the signing of 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward Dimon Carrigan (Boston, Massachusetts/Odessa/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) to a National Letter of Intent. Carrigan inks with FIU following the addition of 6-foot-9, 235-pound forward Sedee Keita, on Monday, who transfers to FIU from St. John's University of the BIG EAST Conference.
Carrigan, who will enter the 2019-20 academic year as a junior, joins Keita (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/St. John's University/University of South Carolina/22 Feed Academy) along with 5-foot-8, 160-pound point guard Tevin Brewer (Fort Smith Arkansas/Coffeyville Community College/Eastern Oklahoma State College/Northside Senior HS), 6-foot-4, 175-pound guard Blake Furcron (Romulus, Michigan/Pratt Community College/Walsh University/Elyria HS), 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard/forward Eric Lovett (Jonesboro, Georgia/Missouri State University West Plains/Jonesboro HS), and 6-foot-6, 220-pound guard/forward Dante Wilcox (West Palm Beach, Florida/Oxbridge Academy) as newcomers to the Panthers' program. The group is expected to make an immediate impact upon their arrival for the 2019-20 season.
"The FIU basketball family is thrilled with our latest addition of Dimon Carrigan," said Ballard. "Dimon comes from a lineage of great programs which include Odessa Community College and one of the nation's most storied and prestigious AAU programs, BABC (Boston Amateur Basketball Club). Dimon is a high energy, versatile big man whose ability to play all over the court will be a tremendous fit for our system. He has been an elite shot blocker at every level and has a burgeoning skill set that will continue to grow in our player development program."
Carrigan began his collegiate career at Odessa College, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) program in Odessa, Texas. As a sophomore, he averaged 4.6 points-per-game, while also shooting 51.2 percent (64-for-125) from the field. He averaged 5.9 rebounds-per-outing and an impressive 2.7 blocked-shots-contest in 34 games played. His blocked shot per game average was good enough for a share of eighth in the nation among all NJCAA Division I players.
It was on the glass and the defensive side of the ball where Carrigan made his biggest impact. The Boston native grabbed double-figure rebounds six times during his sophomore campaign and rejected 91 shots. He blocked four-plus shots nine times and five-or-more seven times. Carrigan grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds against Pima Community College, along with 10 points for his first career double-double. He also rejected a career-high eight shots against Pima.
During his high school career at Cambridge Rindge & Latin, the same high school that produced Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame member Patrick Ewing, Carrigan averaged 12.8 points, 14.1 rebounds and a remarkable 5.5 blocks-per-game (132 total). Carrigan, considered the best shot blocker in the nation coming out of high school, and the subject of a
USA Today High School Sports feature in June 2017, credits his time as a volleyball player in high school with his impressive shot-blocking ability.
For his efforts on the court, during his senior season, Carrigan was named the 2017 Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association Mr. Basketball, and to the 2017 USA Today American Family Insurance All-USA Massachusetts Boys Basketball First Team, among sever other honors.
