MIAMI – The FIU women's tennis team dominated play in its opening matches at the FIU Invitational on Friday at the FIU Tennis facility.
The Panthers swept all six singles matches against FAU and posted three victories over Purdue in doubles competition.
Senior
Kamila Umarova opened the winning run with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over FAU's Martina Kudelova. Umarova then paired up with
Andjela Skrobonja to post a 6-1 win in doubles action over Purdue's Tara Milic and Juana Larranaga.
Skrobonja was also strong in singles play, registering a 6-1, 6-2 victory in straight sets against FAU's Amber McGinnis.
Other singles winners for the Panthers included freshman
Yasmine Kabbaj, who captured a 6-0, 6-2 win over FAU's Katerina Filip. Sophomore
Andreea Velcea tabbed a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against FAU's Greta Schieroni, junior
Kristina Miletic blanked FAU's Millie-Mae Matthews 6-0, 6-0 and senior
Basak Akbas recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win against FAU's Carina Sommer.
Rounding out things for the Panthers in tandem play were Kabbaj and
Ines Bekrar, as the two freshmen recorded a hard-fought 7-5 win over Purdue senior Nathalia Wolf Gasparin and sophomore Rut Galindo. Miletic and Velcea teamed up to provide the final FIU doubles victory with a 6-2 win over the Boilermakers' Csilla Fodor and Seira Shimizu.
UP NEXT
The Panthers continue play on Saturday, Oct. 30 with the second day of competition at the FIU Invite. FIU will begin action on Saturday at 9 a.m. ET with singles play against Purdue (singles) and South Florida (doubles).
