MIAMI – The FIU women's tennis team tabbed victories in five of its six doubles matches while adding wins in seven of 11 singles clashes during the final two days of the FIU Invitational this weekend.
The tandem of
Yasmine Kabbaj and
Ines Bekrar notched a pair of victories on Saturday to lead the charge. First, they posted a 6-4 win over USF's Amelie Boy and Margriet Timmermans before defeating FAU's Katerina Filip and Martina Kudelova 6-3.
Senior
Basak Akbas and freshman
Cecilia Alcobe-Garibay notched a 6-3 victory against Juana Larranaga and Seira Shimizu of Purdue, while
Andreea Velcea and
Kristina Miletic recorded a 6-3 win versus FAU's Greta Schieroni and Carina Sommer.
FIU's
Andjela Skrobonja and
Kamila Umarova paired up to split a pair of matches. First dropping a 6-2 decision against USF's Alexandria Mjos and Grace Eland before rebounding to hand FAU's Amber McGinnis and Millie-Mae Matthews a 6-2 setback.
In singles action, the Panthers registered six victories over the final two days of action. In Saturday's play Skrobonja posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Purdue's Tara Milic; Velcea recorded a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory against the Boilermakers' Juana Larranaga; Alocobe-Garibay won 6-2, 6-2 over FAU's Sommer and Bekrar won after Purdue's Rut Galindo retired (0-6, 3-2).
Sunday saw Kabbaj notch a 5-7, 6-3, 10-5 tiebreaker win against USF's Boy. Akbas also captured a tiebreaker victory over the Bulls' Mjos 3-6, 6-3, 10-3. Bekrar sealed her second win of the weekend with a 6-0, 6-2 win over USF's Eland.
UP NEXT
The Panthers return to action on Friday, Jan. 28 when they travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to square off in a dual match against the University of Florida. FIU will close out that weekend with matches against Florida State (Jan. 29) and Illinois (Jan. 30).
