MIAMI (Feb. 1, 2021) - The spring slate for FIU Athletics is in full swing after this past week, as seven sports were in action.
FIU enjoyed a wave of wins in the first big week back in action, below is a recap of how each team fared this past week.
Swimming & Diving
After defeating Florida, Miami and FGCU to open the spring, the Panthers hosted FAU this past week for its first home meet of the season. FIU's divers opened action on Wednesday, before the swimmers capped the squad's 211-81 victory against FAU on Saturday. Following
Mandy Song and
Maha Gouda's combined three wins in diving events, a total of nine Panther swimmers won individual events on Saturday with
Stephanie Hussey,
Julia Miranda and
Jasmine Nocentini claiming two events each. After the South Florida Diving Invitational on Monday, Feb. 8, the Panthers will gear up for a run at their seventh-straight league title at the C-USA Championships on Feb. 25-27 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Volleyball
The FIU indoor volleyball team opened up its spring season this past Wednesday, as the Panthers fell in a tough, five-set decision to Jacksonville. FIU will now enter Conference USA play as the Panthers host Old Dominion on Feb. 8-9, both Monday and Tuesday's matches will get underway at 1 p.m. ET.
Women's Track & Field
The FIU women's indoor track & field team opened competition at Clemson this past weekend, as
Filippa Miller set a school-record in the pole vault to highlight FIU's opening weekend at the Bob Pollock Invitational. The Panthers return to the track on Saturday, Feb. 6, as FIU takes part in the Marshall Classic in Huntington, West Virginia.
Women's Golf
The FIU women's golf team opened 2021 on a good note, as the Panthers finished runner-up at the Battle at Old South over the weekend in South Carolina. The linksters will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 15, as the Panthers travel to Jacksonville for the First Coast Classic hosted by North Florida.
Women's Tennis
The FIU women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over FGCU to open its season this past Saturday. The win for FIU improves its record to 6-1 overall against FGCU under head coach
Katarina Petrovic. The Panthers will be off until Feb. 20, as FIU is set to host its first home match against North Florida at Noon.
Men's Basketball
The Panthers dropped a pair of close contests to Charlotte on the road this past week, with
Eric Lovett leading the way in both games after the senior posted a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double and 17-point effort against the 49ers. FIU returns home on Monday, Feb. 1, as the Panthers host Florida Memorial in non-conference play before returning to C-USA action against UTSA this weekend.
Men's Soccer
The FIU men's soccer team earned its second preseason win of the spring, as the Panthers defeated USF in Tampa by the score of 2-0. The Panthers knocked off No. 8 UCF on Jan. 23 by 2-0 as well. First-year head coach
Kyle Russell and the Panthers officially open the 2021 spring season on Sunday, Feb. 7, against Jacksonville. First kick is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
