DALLAS (March 24, 2021) - FIU track & field freshman thrower
Rhema Otabor was named C-USA Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, following a sensational outdoor debut at the Hurricane Invitational this past weekend.
Otabor took the top spot in the javelin with a throw of 54.19m, which is tops in C-USA and fourth in the nation. The freshman from Nassau, Bahamas, set a FIU school record and a Bahamas junior national record with her effort, along with passing the World Under-20 qualifying standard.
"When we recruited her, we figured there was a lot of potential there – her coach back home did a great job," said FIU head coach
Ryan Heberling. "The other day at practice she almost threw 56m, so we knew there was a big throw in there. It's exciting. It was huge."
