MIAMI (April 23, 2021) – In addition to an already highly touted FIU women's basketball recruiting class, head coach
Jesyka Burks-Wiley announced the addition of transfers Ariel Colón from Elon and María Torres from Colorado State on Friday morning.
Ariel Colón (Guard | Orlando, Florida | Elon | Ocoee HS)
Colón, a 5-10 guard from Orlando, comes to Miami after four seasons at Elon where she averaged seven points and 3.6 rebounds in nearly 90 career games with the Phoenix.
Colón had a sensational year in 2019-20, as she led the Phoenix in points per game (11.4) and rebounds per contest (5.3) to earn All-Colonial Athletic Association Third Team honors.
As a freshman, Colón helped the Phoenix repeat as CAA champions, as Elon booked a ticket to the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
"Anytime you can add a local player that is as skilled and talented as Ariel, you know you are doing something right. Ariel is going to bring us experience and 3-level scoring at the wing spot," Burks-Wiley said. "I'm so grateful she chose us to complete her college career back home."
María Torres (Forward | Madrid, Spain | Colorado State | Les Ortega y Gasset M86)
Torres, a 6-1 forward from Madrid, Spain, makes her way to the 305 after playing her freshman season at Colorado State. Torres averaged 1.3 points in just seven games played, while scoring a season-high eight points and earning two blocks in CSU's season opener against Regis.
Before coming to America, Torres had an impressive resume as an amateur overseas. The forward averaged a triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists a contest in her final year, while playing in tournaments in Slovenia, Greece, France and her home country of Spain.
Torres played at Les Ramiro de Maeztu and Rivas Parque Sureste before concluding her high school career at Les Ortega y Gasset M86. She was also a part of two regional championships and helped her squad rank as high as sixth nationally in 2019.
"I'm so excited to be adding versatile scoring at the forward position with Maria Torres," Burks-Wiley said. "Her comfort level playing on the perimeter, mixed with her size and IQ, is going to create tough matchups for opponents."
