MIAMI (April 9, 2021) - Andjela Skrobonja of FIU women's tennis was named the Conference USA Co-Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Friday.
The honor is the second this season for the women's tennis program, with
Kamila Umarova earning the first in late February. Skrobonja was also named the ITA UTR National Player of the Week this past Wednesday.
With last Friday's match against No. 28 Rice on the line, Skrobonja rallied to win six-straight games in the third set and clinch the 4-3 win for the Panthers. For the weekend, the freshman won two singles matches and earned a pair of wins in doubles with first-time partner Umarova.
"We are very happy to have our freshman step up in the biggest moments against ranked opponents," head coach
Katarina Petrovic said. "Andjela is a very talented player and she's improving every day."
After the victories over No. 28 Rice and USF, the Panthers are 9-0 on the year which is the best start in program history since 1994. Furthermore, the ranked win over Rice was the team's highest since 2010. Overall, the Panthers have won their last 15 matches.
