MURFREESBORO, Tennessee (May 16, 2021) - The FIU track and field team concluded its weekend at the Conference USA Championships with a number of impressive performances that included athletes taking the top step on the podium in Murfreesboro.
Freshman
Rhema Otabor continued her stellar season, earning gold in the javelin with a mark of 51.37m. Otabor has now taken the victory in five of the six meets she has competed in this season.
Meanwhile, Queshun Watson-Riggins followed up his long jump victory by taking the top spot in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 15.69m - the second best jump in FIU outdoor history, only behind Marcus Ghent's leap of 15.87m at the NCAA Championships in 2016.
Desmond Dorceus earned points for FIU in the shot put, taking the bronze medal with a throw of 16.74m. His throw of 16.98m earlier this year is the FIU #2 all-time mark.
Dina Cosic finished her season placing fifth in the javelin with a mark of 42.53m, while
Trevon Laidler also scored for FIU in the triple jump, finishing eighth.
FIU's young middle distance runners had an admirable weekend as well. Freshman
Leonarda Farkas qualified for the 1500 finals, finishing in 4:46 this afternoon, while freshman
Alejandro Garcia also made the finals, crossing the line in 4:11 after an impressive time of 3:58 to qualify yesterday.
Daira Deicmane's appearance in the 800 finals earned a point for FIU, with the sophomore finishing in 2:22.
The FIU men scored 41 points to place eighth, while the women scored 34.75 points to take 10th.
UP NEXT
The Panthers who qualified will now prepare for the NCAA East Prelims, set to take place May 27-29 in Jacksonville, Florida.
