MIAMI, Fla (June 16, 2021) - The FIU tennis program has earned a spot in the prestigious 2022 ITA Kickoff Tournament, as the Panthers will compete in the Florida State-hosted Tallahassee pod as the No. 3 seed.
FIU, who ended the season ranked 38th in the ITA rankings, will join Florida State, Florida, and Illinois in the pod.
Fifteen sites around the country will play in four-team pods, while a 16th in Madison, Wisconsin, entered the host Wisconsin Badgers as the No. 64-ranked team as an automatic qualifier for playing host to the ITA Indoors Championships in early February 2022.
Each of the four-team pods were selected in numerical order via a draft based upon the final Spring 2021 national rankings with the No. 1-15 schools each serving as a host. Starting with No. 16 Michigan, schools were able to select which site was most advantageous and alluring for them to participate. As sites filled up, those schools were slotted into No. 2-4 seeds at the respective location to fill out the four-team field.
The Panthers are one of five Conference USA teams competing in the event, along with No. 30 Old Dominion, No. 40 Rice, No. 52 Florida Atlantic, and No. 53 Charlotte.
FIU is coming off a Conference USA Championship appearance and their second NCAA Tournament appearance in four years.
