Head football coach's new deal will have him leading Panthers through 2027 season

MIAMI – Coach Mac is here to stay. FIU head football coach Mike MacIntyre has signed a contract extension that will keep him in Miami through the 2027 football season, FIU athletics director Scott Carr announced on Thursday.

"We couldn't be more excited to have Mike leading our football program!" Carr said. "His vision, character, work ethic and humility are second to none. It's truly amazing what he has done to assemble a first-class staff and build a very healthy team culture. While we strive to win every game, we're pleased with the increase in wins from previous years and how hard our young men competed the entire season. Our future is very bright under Coach Mac's leadership!"

After taking over a team that went 1-16 in its last two seasons, MacIntyre increased the Panthers' win total by 300 percent, leading the third youngest team in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to a 4-8 overall record in 2022.

FIU's back-to-back wins over Charlotte and Louisiana Tech midway through the campaign marked the first time the Panthers had won consecutive games since October 2019. The team didn't have a victory over an FBS opponent since 2019 and MacIntyre led FIU to three in 2022, with wins over New Mexico State, Charlotte, and Louisiana Tech.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to lead such a remarkable group of student-athletes and staff here at FIU," MacIntyre said. "From President Jessell and AD Scott Carr to the entire FIU community, we are energized about the future of FIU football. I can't thank them enough for their support and belief in our vision. The future is bright!"

In addition to improvements on the field, MacIntyre has instilled an inviting family atmosphere around the program, improved academics within his team, and helped increase both ticket sales and student attendance with his enthusiasm and excitement for FIU.

The football team's NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) score for the spring was an impressive 992 with MacIntyre at the helm, season ticket sales nearly doubled, and single-game ticket sales improved 40 percent. Student attendance at FIU football games was at its highest in over a decade with an opening-game student crowd of over 4,000.

MacIntyre is currently gearing up for the first of two National Signing Days for the 2023 season next Wednesday, Dec. 21, when FIU will welcome its next class of signees to the Panther Family.
