MIAMI – FIU junior quarterback Grayson James has been selected to the 2023 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, which was released on Thursday.
 
This marks the 11th season of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, which recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
 
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or currently playing at Texas D1 four-year college.
 
James, who was one of 69 players included on this season's list, enjoyed one of the best opening seasons in 2022 as a starting signal caller in FIU history.  He completed 209-of-357 pass attempts for 1,962 yards and 11 touchdowns.  James threw for over 300 yards in two contests and tossed three or more TDs in three games.
 
The Watch List announced today will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to 5 finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans, and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for January 10, 2024.
 
The voting committee co-chaired by Kirk Bohls, Austin Statesman, and Phil Hicks, Tyler Morning Telegraph, includes 43 broadcasters, commentators, and journalists from across the country as well as fans and the previous winners.
