ORLANDO (March 23, 2024) -
Raynell Chambers set a new school record in the 400 and
Michaelle Valentin in the hammer throw as FIU excelled Friday and Saturday at the UCF Knights Invite.
Chambers, who had tied the school record the previous week at the Hurricane Invitational with a 47.15, flew under that mark Saturday running 46.70. He breaks the record he shared with Sean Roach that had stood since 1999.
On Friday,
Michaelle Valentin broke Terrisa Russel's school record in the hammer, which had stood since 2019. Valentin threw 62.65m to place second in the event. On Saturday, Valentin nearly set the school record in the discus, but proceeded to break the Haitian national record in the event with a personal best mark of 57.37m en route to a first place finish.
"A couple of performances from these two athletes that are really deserved," said head coach
Ryan Heberling. "Raynell's had a terrific start to this season and Michaelle continues to excel and make big throws."
In the high jump, freshman Jeremy Perlin set a personal best of 2.07m to take third in the event.
Fabiola Declet placed 8th of 42 competitors in the 100 hurdles. In the 1500,
Lisa Adjouadi and
Laetitia Raoult placed 22nd and 23rd in a 74-person field.
FIU will next send a number of athletes to Austin next week to take part in the prestigious Texas Relays.
