Meaghan Asselta began with the FIU softball team prior to the 2015 campaign. A veteran softball coach with nearly 10 years of head coaching experience, she works will all aspects of hitting, fielding and baserunning with the Panthers.
In her first season with the Panthers, FIU won 30 games. Sophomore Stephanie Texeira earned was named to the All-Conference team after batting a school-record .444, drawing a school-record 51 walks and driving in 51 runs, second-most in school history.
Prior to her arrival in Miami, Asselta was the head coach at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. During her three-year tenure with the Leopards (2010-13), she guided the program to its first Patriot League Tournament appearance since the 2009 season. Two of her players earned all-tournament accolades, while three others received All-Patriot League Second-Team laurels.
Before joining the Leopards staff, Asselta served as the head coach at Manhattan College (2006-09), before spending the 2010 campaign with the University of Rhode Island as an assistant coach.
While with the Jaspers, Asselta brought the team to the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament during the 2009 season. During that year, she guided her team to a school-record 11 conference wins, which earned the team a share of the MAAC regular season title for the first time in school history and earning for her the MAAC Coach of the Year.
A member of the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association since 2004, Asselta began her coaching career at Drew University in 2005 as an assistant coach in charge of recruiting, while assisting with infield and outfield drills.
A former Rutgers’ shortstop from 2001-04, she was the Scarlet Knights’ captain during her junior and senior year. Asselta graduated from Rutgers in 2005 with a bachelor’s in exercise and sports studies.Â
