Taran Alvelo is entering her second season as a volunteer assistant coach with the FIU softball program.
Alvelo enjoyed a stellar playing career at the University of Washington, where she was honored as a two-time All-America selection and a four-time All-Pac-12 honoree.
She was a finalist for the 2018 USA Softball Player of the Year and was on the final list for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award.
Alvelo helped lead the Huskies to three Women’s College World Series berths and a national runner-up finish in 2018. In 2019, she was named to the All-Women’s College World Series Team and was recognized as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2016.
A standout performer on the mound, Alvelo closed out her career at Washington ranked second on the program’s all-time lists in strikeouts (895) and wins (102). She is one of only three players to have recorded 300 strikeouts in a single season in Washington program history.
Alvelo currently plays professionally with the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPL). She was named to the All-NPF Team in 2019 after being selected No. 8 overall in the draft that same season.
Internationally, Alvelo was a member of the gold medal winning Puerto Rico National Team at the 2018 Central American Games. The 2018 squad also ranked third globally. In 2019, Alvelo aided Puerto Rico to a bronze medal showing at the Pan American Games.

She also held the title of Pitching Director for Mississippi Premier in 2020-21, where she helped develop an elite youth league and served as the pitching instructor for the majority of players in the area.
