Brien Moffitt

Brien Moffitt enters his sixth season overall and second season at FIU serving as the Associate Coach of the Panthers' swimming and diving team. Moffitt primarily works with the sprint and mid-distance student-athletes, while also serving as the team's recruiting coordinator. He was hired on August 12, 2020 as the team's assistant coach before being promoted as an associate coach on October 26, 2023.

In the 2024 - 2025 season, he helped FIU to a second-place finish at the 2025 American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championships, finishing just 1.5 points shy of first place. The Panthers captured a meet-high seven gold medals and guided junior Nicole Frank who earned AAC Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet taking home three indvidual golds. He helped Emma Becker who made the 2025 NCAA Championships, while she set a new school / meet record in the 100 breast. FIU also set a new school / meet record in the 200 medley relay with the team of Oumy Diop, Diana Santamaria, Jessica Shpilko, and Frida Stretre Løbersli.

He was a key part in the Panthers securing their first AAC Championship in their second season in the American Athletic Conference. The swimmers took home six gold, the most of any team. Moffitt guided senior Christie Chue to five golds, earning the AAC Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet award and making the NCAA Championships for the third straight year. In addition, Chue posted a program record in the 200 IM and AAC meet record in the 200 breast. Emma Becker recorded a meet record at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship (NIC) in the 200 breast.

Moffitt helped the Panthers make an instant impact in the program’s first season as members of the American Athletic Conference. FIU swimmers were stellar at the AAC Championships taking eight gold medals, the most of any team, and Nicole Frank being named 2022-23 Freshman of the Year.
 
He also helped coach swimmer Christie Chue to an appearance at the 2023 NCAA Championships. She competed in the 100 and 200-breaststroke races, setting a school record in the 100-breast and earning Second-Team All American honors on the way.

During the 2021-22 Season, Moffitt aided in one of the most successful seasons in program history on the way to FIU's eighth straight Conference USA title. Throughout the year, the Panthers recorded 12 program records, two C-USA Records, two CSCAA National Invitational Championship (NIC) meet records, and three BBC pool records.

In postseason competition, the Panthers finished runner-up at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship (NIC) and later placed 36th overall at the NCAA Championships, marking the program's highest finish at the NCAAs since 2017. Moffitt helped coach freshman Christie Chue to an NCAA All-American Honorable Mention at the national meet and a C-USA Swimmer of the Meet award at the league championships. At the 2022 C-USA Championships, Moffitt helped the Panther swimmers garner 29 medals, including 11 golds at the podium.

Under Moffitt's guidance, the Panthers set FIU and C-USA records in the 200 medley relay (1:36.79), the 100 breaststroke (59.86), and the 200 breaststroke (2:07.99) at the C-USA Championships. At the CSCAA NIC, Moffitt and the Panthers shattered program records in the 50 yard butterfly (23.90), the 100 individual medley (55.21). FIU also broke both a school record and a meet record in the 50 breast (27.60) at the NIC. During the regular season, the Panthers shattered program records in the 100 butterfly twice and ultimately set the Panther standard at 52.71. 

In the summer of 2021, Moffitt also acted as the Head Swimming Coach for the British Virgin Island's at the Tokyo Olympic Games, where he guided Panther Elinah Phillip to a new national record in the 50 meter freestyle (25.74). At the Olympic Games, Moffitt also helped coach Phillips to a 34th overall finish in the 50 meter, marking the highest ever for a Caribbean swimmer in the event.

During the 2020-21 season, Moffitt helped the Panthers secure their seventh consecutive C-USA title, including a sweep of all five relays at the league championship. Moffitt guided Jasmine Nocentini to a C-USA Swimmer of the Meet award and Elinah Phillip to a Newcomer of the Meet honor. The Panthers also set a new program record in the 200 freestyle (1:45.93). Moffitt played a key role in Nocentini's qualification for the NCAA Championships, where Nocentini competed in both the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle. 

Moffitt joined FIU after spending the 2019-20 season at Florida State as a volunteer coach for the men's and women's swimming and diving teams. During his time at FSU, Moffitt was responsible for data collection, metrics of workouts, facilitating filming and stroke analytics. As a part of head coach Neal Studd's staff, Moffitt helped guide FSU to eight ACC podium finishes, while also breaking three school records and making five relay NCAA A Standard times. Additionally, Moffitt worked with eight world championship qualifiers on the Seminoles roster and helped train Olympic hopefuls post-graduation.

Moffitt previously worked as a graduate assistant at the University of West Florida, where he composed and facilitated in-water workouts for various training groups, led meet warm-ups for student-athletes, and conducted in and out-of-water training activities. As a member of the UWF staff, Moffitt helped the squad break seven school records and eight freshman records. He also helped guide 19 student-athletes to All-American awards, while 28 received All-Conference recognition. 

Collegiately, Moffitt swam for Grand Valley State from 2013-17, where he was elected as the team captain for his senior season. 

Born and raised in Rochester Hills, Michigan, Moffitt received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Grand Valley State University in 2017, while double majoring in finance and general management. He obtained a Master's Degree in Education from the University of West Florida in 2019.
