MIAMI (Jan. 3, 2016) – The FIU swimming and diving team hosted the 2016 FIU Sprint Invite on Sunday, Jan. 3, from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center, completing the nine-team meet with a second-place finish.
The Panthers (620) finished behind Big Ten foe Purdue (758.5). Following the Panthers were Duquesne (439.5), Indian River State (366), Florida Atlantic (247), Keene State (61), Saint Rose (57), Berry College (43) and Wheeling Jesuit (23).
Sophomore
Naomi Ruele claimed a first-place finish in the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 58.15. Sophomore
Skye Carey finished two spots behind Ruele with a time of 58.21. Carey won the 50-yard Backstroke, registering a time of 26.93. Junior
Jennifer Alfani placed in the top-five in the event, finishing fifth (27.79).

Kyna Pereira placed third in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:52.43) followed by Carey (fifth), with a time of 1:53.10.
In the 50-yard Butterfly, Alfani (25.81) and junior
Jennifer Deist (25.89) were FIU's top finishers in the 50-yard Butterfly, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the 100-yard Freestyle, Pereira notched a time of 52.07, giving the Umkomaas, South Africa, native a second-place finish in the event. She also posted a 5:00.89 in the 500-yard Freestyle for third.
Sophomore
Chase Harris notched FIU's best time in the 50-yard Breaststroke (31.09) for a fourth-place finish.
The Panthers will next take on Kansas and N.C State in the FIU Tri-Meet on Friday, Jan. 8. The event is scheduled to start from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center at 3 p.m. ET.
