IRVING, TEXAS (November 28, 2016) -- Following the first win of the season for FIU on Sunday over Robert Morris, Panther freshman
Alexis Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida / Covenant Christian HS) was named Monday the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office.
Â
Gordon scored a season-high 21 points in her first career start last Tuesday night at home against Georgetown and was named to the All-Tournament Team of the FIU Thanksgiving Tournament on Sunday, following FIU's victory and overtime loss on Friday in Miami. Gordon nailed six three-point baskets, a team season-high, and added six assists in 39 minutes against the Hoyas on Tuesday. She played 44 minutes in the overtime loss to undefeated Weber State Friday, adding eight rebounds with her 16 points.
Â
During the week, she was 10-for-23 (.435) from three-point range, and actually shot a higher percentage from three than from the field overall (.412) while averaging 39.7 minutes per game for the week. She is the team's leading scorer, averaging 12 points per game, also leading the squad with 14 made treys and a 42.4 percent clip from long range. She leads the team with 37.4 minutes per game through five contests.
Â
Gordon's honor marks the first Freshman of the Week for the program since current Panther
Kiandre'a Pound won the award on February 23, 2015.
Â
FIU will travel to Tampa, Florida, to tangle with USF Wednesday, starting at 7 p.m.
