FIU has 2 signees selected in 2017 MLB Draft's first day

On the first day of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft, FIU had two members of its top-ranked 2017 signing class drafted by the teams that met in the 2014 World Series.

Outfielder Heliot Ramos was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the first round as the 19th overall draft pick. Catcher MJ Melendez was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the second round as the 52nd overall pick.

Ramos (below) and Melendez are part of the 2017 FIU class, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation by Perfect Game.

Ramos, a 17-year-old centerfielder from Leadership Christian Academy in Guaynabo, is ranked by Baseball America as the No. 1 player in Puerto Rico and the No. 30 player among all draft prospects.

Ramos, who stands 6-1 and is listed at 188 pounds, missed hitting for the cycle by a double at the Under Armour All-America Game at Wrigley Field last July.

Ramos's older brother, Henry, currently plays with former FIU slugger Edwin Rios on the Tulsa Drillers -- the Los Angeles Dodgers' Double-A team.

Melendez, the son of FIU head coach Mervyl, was the No. 2-rated catcher in the 2017 draft according to Baseball America.

MJ, a 6-1, 175-pound left-handed hitter, ironically was ranked the No. 52 overall prospect by Baseball America. MJ was drafted No. 52 overall by the Royals.

At Westminster Christian last season, MJ hit .389 with eight home runs and 29 RBI en route to being named the catcher on the All-Dade Baseball First Team.

The 2017 MLB Draft continues Tuesday at 1 p.m. with rounds 3 through 10 and concludes Wednesday with rounds 11 through 40.
